What are the causes of a yeast infection? There are several contributing factors, but the actual cause of a yeast infection is a microscopic fungus known as Candida.

There are more than 20 species of Candida, but the most common is Candida Albicans. This is covered here, along with other factors which help the Candida to multiply and cause yeast infection.

The Candida fungus is found naturally in our bodies. Around 80% of the population have it. It particularly likes the warm, moist areas such as the vagina, mouth, gut, etc.

Normally it causes no problems at all, because our body's 'beneficial bacteria' keeps it in check, so that it cannot multiply or 'overgrow'. When it overgrows it causes a yeast infection.

However, sometimes the Candida can overgrow out of control, thus causing yeast infections. The main reasons for this are the depletion of beneficial bacteria in the body and a lowered immune system.
 
Causes of a Yeast Infection - Contributing Factors

Some of the conditions that contribute to this are; antibiotic overuse, overuse of steroids, AIDS / HIV, cancer treatment, and poor nutrition.

Other factors which can aid the Candida are; elevated sugar levels (diabetes, diet), hormonal imbalance (pregnancy, menstruation), pH changes (e.g. acid / alkaline out of balance in vagina).
